We receive a lot of calls and emails from the public asking about; "False IVA adverts?"
Money Advice Direct is becoming increasingly concerned that IVAs, the popular alternative to bankruptcy, are in some cases being mis-sold by the multitude of 'IVA factories' which have sprung up over the past few years with false IVA adverts. Some companies which promise to help people manage their debts have actually been warned by the UK to amend their false IVA advert so they do not mislead the public.
The advice team at Money Advice Direct feel that some false IVA adverts make false claims and fail to warn of problems. Our vigilance in reporting these companies to the correct authorities has actually forced several of these companies to lose their licenses’ and be forced out of the debt advice sector.
Many of the debt advice organisations using false IVA adverts sell the advantages of an IVA but deliberately withhold the disadvantages, choosing not to tell the public about the IVA disadvantages. The truth about an IVA is that 60-70 % of debt can be written off, not 95% as stated in the false IVA adverts.
False IVA adverts: What is the truth about IVA write off percentages? What are my creditors likely to agree to?
The Creditors’ policies regarding the amount they write-off differ from bank to bank and change quite a lot. Money Advice Direct work very closely with the creditors and we are kept up to date with their IVA voting policies.
People can get debt advice to help them get debt free (subject to terms and conditions) from the IVA unit at Money Advice Direct.
