The personal debt helpline provides specialist level, quality assured, personal debt advice over the telephone. Money Advice Direct is a registered personal debt helpline providing advice and support for anyone in financial difficulty. The service is always free to call for clients and confidential. We can:

• Give you support until the personal debt problem is resolved
• Help you manage your personal finances
• Explain your personal rights
• Contact your creditors on your behalf
• Advise you on state benefits
• Help with court action
• Please note that for consumers considering an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) or Protected Trust Deed (PTD); that only unsecured debts are to be included e.g credit cards, unsecured loans and bank overdrafts. Please note that at the end of the period those debts that are not included such as secured debts, Government fines and child support payments will remain to be outstanding.
• Please note that for consumers considering an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) or Protected Trust Deed (PTD); in most cases of an IVA/PTD creditors will be prepared to write off no more than 70% of a debt and in some cases 60%. Also note all customers can achieve the stated 'write-off' because every case considered is different.

The personal debt helpline is a national telephone helpline for people with debt problems in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The service is completely confidential. The service has existed for over 10 years. The service provides self-help advice to its callers and also produces written self-help packs and personal debt factsheets to back this up. The service can also assist callers with the setting up of Debt Management Plans for England & Wales or Debt Management Plans for Scotland.

We can contact your creditors on your behalf and arrange for you to make reduced payments that you can afford. Or we can prepare paperwork for you to send to creditors yourself.

The helpline can explain and help you deal with Bankruptcy, IVA's, CCJ's, Court Procedures, Bailiffs, Repossession, Eviction and other personal debt related issues.

The causes of personal debt:-

• Ignoring the debt problem is one of the main causes of debt.
• Not working out a budget so forgetting about occasional items such as school expenses, Christmas etc.
• Be unrealistic about basic needs such food, fuel, clothing etc.
• Not inform your creditors that you are in difficulty. Reputable lenders will have a reasonable view if they know the circumstances.
• Not maintaining agreements with creditors, maintain it without fail. Do not ignore letters, reminders or default notices.
• Not attending court hearings.
• Borrowing more money to pay off existing debts. This increases your outgoings and just delays dealing with the problem.
• Not prioritising mortgage and rent payments. Remember that your home may be at risk if you do this.
• Divorce or marriage breakdown is a major cause of divorce.
