Money Advice Direct Debt Helpline is a national telephone helpline for people with debt problems in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The service is contactable on freephone 0800 074 6918. The advice provided is confidential and on a best advice basis. The service has existed since 2000 and was set up assist consumers to end their personal debts in the UK. The Debt Helpline service provides self-help advice to its callers and also produces written self-help packs and fact sheets to back this up. The service can also assist callers with the setting up of Debt Management Plans, Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVA), bankruptcy and mortgages.

A process of negotiating with creditors is need to end debt problems
Money Advice Direct is able to negotiate with your creditors and most creditors will consider any reasonable request or offer of repayment that is made. Sometimes, we need to contact creditors several times before they will agree to end or reduce debt.
What you ask your creditors for will depend on:
- What debts you have
- Whether you have money left over to offer to end debt.
- Whether you have belongings worth selling to pay some or all of the debt off to end debt.
- Whether or not your situation is likely to get better or end
It’s important that creditors can see that what is being offered is reasonable in the circumstances. To end debt or reduce debt here are some tips:-
- Be clear about what you are asking the creditors to do.
- Always ask to freeze interest. Unless they freeze interest, your debt will carry on growing and will never end.
- Tell them what the regular payment intervals you are able to offer, that is, whether you can pay monthly or weekly
- To end debt explain your situation fully. If you have priority debts, explain to non-priority creditors that you have to pay off priority debts first and say what you are offering to each of your priority creditors
- To end you must show evidence to support your request or offer of payment, for example, medical evidence if you can’t pay your debts because of illness
- To end debt mention any changes that you know are going to happen which will affect your ability to pay or the amount you are offering.
- Be prepared to contact your creditors more than once to end debt.
